Humanitarian demining by scientific methods is a very important technical issues and ground penetrating radar (GPR) can be one of the best solutions for this difficult task. However, strong clutter makes difficult for detecting buried landmines in real situations. We have developed a synthetic aperture based GPR and tested its capabilities by experiments. We found that synthetic aperture radar (SAR) approach is very useful to suppress the clutter in strong inhomogeneous soil conditions, and could achieve a good imaging of buried landmines in inhomogeneous soil and rough
